Becoming a surrogate for a California couple struggling with infertility is one of the most selfless things a woman can do. This option is not for everyone, but if you are considering becoming a gestational carrier, you should know what to expect. Stories from those who’ve lived it might help you decide if it’s right for you.

Understanding gestational surrogacy

Gestational surrogacy is an option available to individuals and couples with fertility issues who want to have children. If a woman is unable to conceive or carry a child for various reasons or a same-sex male couple wants to have a baby, a surrogate can have the baby for them. Surrogates must undergo health screening to ensure they are healthy enough to have a child and are matched with candidates.

Choosing to become a surrogate

Women choose gestational surrogacy to help others who are not as fortunate as them in terms of fertility. One woman who has been a surrogate three times decided she wanted to help people have the families they’ve always wanted after connecting with another woman who was a gestational carrier. Her friend revealed to her that she was carrying a child for another couple. While she thought it was great, she was pregnant with her own child and decided to wait a couple of years to pursue surrogacy herself.

Another gestational surrogate decided to go that route because she watched some close friends deal with infertility and wanted to help. As an added bonus, she revealed that she also loved being pregnant. She had four children of her own and helped a same-sex male couple start their family. They immediately bonded, she delivered twins for them and they’ve kept in touch.

One woman decided to become a surrogate after seeing an ad on social media. She revealed that her own mother had considered surrogacy. After having her own daughter, she looked into becoming a gestational carrier and learned she had hypothyroidism. She was treated and then cleared for embryo transfer. She delivered a healthy boy for a loving couple.

Relying on a gestational surrogate is a good way to start your family if you need assistance.
